Staying Connected in Asia: A guide to Hotspots, eSims and Travel SIM Cards

As we prepare for our upcoming travels to Asia, one of the key challenges I'm working through (again) is how to stay reliably connected. While exploring new destinations is exciting, ensuring that we have steady internet access for navigation, communication, and work has become just as essential as packing a passport. At the moment, I rely on our Solis Pro 5G hotspot, which includes a month-long unlimited subscription plan. It has been a considered companion on past trips thanks to its seamless global coverage, but with the three of us traveling together, I'm considering backup solutions to keep everyone online.

Solis Hotspots

On standby, I also have a Solis Lite hotspot, the smaller brother of the Pro. It works fine and I can also avail the same  unlimited plan as the Pro for $99, which saves the hassle of swapping sim cards or troubleshooting. However, since we'll be hopping from Manila to Tokyo, I've been leaning towards using eSIMs for a cheaper option for Adi and myself as backup. The issue with eSIMs is that each region in Asia requires a different plan, so we'd need to switch when moving between the Philippines and Japan-something the Simo's avoids entirely thanks to its seamless global coverage.

When it comes to cost, the differences are significant. eSIMs generally run between $30-$50 for 10-20GB over 15 days, which adds up quickly when traveling as a group. The Solis subscription, though slightly more expensive upfront, provides unlimited access without limits or changes. This comparison is  especially important to me after a previous trip where international roaming with AT&T left me with a staggering $300 roaming bill. Since then, I've been determined to find smarter, more predictable solutions and not to commit to any single option.

One promising alternative I recently discovered is Fonus Mobile, which offers eSIMs and Physical SIM cards for international travelers. I've placed an order and expect them to arrive in the coming days. If they deliver on reliability and value, Fonus could provide the balance I've been looking for: affordable, straightforward connectivity without the constant worry of data caps or technical hiccups.

Ultimately, connectivity is no longer just a convenience-it's a travel essential. As we head into this journey through Manila and Tokyo, I'm eager to test these options and see which solution holds up best. With the right setup, staying connected doesn't have to be a distraction, allowing us to focus on what really matters: experiencing the culture, food, and adventures that awaits in Asia.

The eSIM vs Pocket WiFi Nightmare: A Traveler’s Cautionary Tale

Traveling to Japan, I was excited to use an eSIM for the first time, hoping it would simplify my connectivity needs. I had carefully prepared ahead of time, thinking that ditching the pocket WiFi and relying solely on my phone’s eSIM would be a smooth, hassle-free solution.

                                                                                       The iPhone duo

However, I quickly learned that my phone needed to be unlocked to add an additional eSIM account, something I hadn’t considered. My iPhone 16, which only supports eSIM, was locked to my carrier, meaning I couldn’t use a physical SIM nor add the travel eSIM I had purchased. This oversight set the stage for a much bigger headache.

                                                                               Early Morning in Sapporo

To make matters worse, my backup phone—a fully unlocked iPhone 13 that had been set up with the eSIM travel account—decided to fail me completely. The device locked me out and became a useless “brick” right at the start of the trip. Despite my best efforts, including a call to Apple support, there was no way to revive the phone. It was a frustrating experience, especially when I had hoped that my backup would be a safety net in case of issues. Instead, it added another layer of complexity to an already challenging situation.

                                                                               Apple online support chat

Now, I’m stuck hitching a ride on my wife’s pocket WiFi, which is inconvenient and not ideal. I had spent so much time planning and preparing for a smooth trip, only to find that my new phone’s inability to use a physical SIM, paired with the failure of my backup phone, left me in a bind. The whole idea of an eSIM, which seemed so appealing in theory, has become a major source of frustration. It’s not just about staying connected—it’s about being able to access critical things like itineraries and Google Maps to navigate a foreign country. Without reliable internet, even the simplest tasks become daunting.

This experience has highlighted just how much we rely on connectivity while traveling, especially in a country like Japan where technology plays such a big role in navigating the cities. For someone who needs to be online constantly, this has been the worst nightmare.

My iPhone 16 may be cutting-edge with its eSIM-only design, but it doesn’t feel as practical now when I can’t even use a physical SIM card.

On top of that, my backup phone, which was supposed to have both a physical SIM and eSIM, chose the worst possible time to “have a stroke.” As I sit here, wondering if I need to rent another pocket WiFi, I can’t help but feel like maybe the good old physical SIM isn’t such a bad thing after all.

Pocket WiFi vs. eSIM in Japan: Which is Better for Tourists?

Traveling to Japan offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity, but staying connected during your journey is essential. As a tourist, you have several options for internet access, with pocket WiFi devices and eSIMs being the most popular. Both have their pros and cons, and the right choice can enhance your travel experience significantly. In this post, we’ll compare pocket WiFi and eSIMs to determine which option is more beneficial for tourists visiting Japan.

Convenience and Setup

When it comes to convenience, pocket WiFi devices provide a straightforward solution. These portable hotspots allow you to connect multiple devices simultaneously, which is great for families or groups traveling together. However, they do require careful handling and charging, as forgetting to recharge can leave you disconnected during your travels. eSIMs, on the other hand, offer a more integrated experience. Once activated, they enable seamless connectivity without the need for extra devices. For solo travelers or those who prefer to travel light, eSIMs can be particularly appealing, simplifying the process of staying connected.

Cost Considerations

Cost is another important factor to consider when choosing between pocket WiFi and eSIMs. Renting a pocket WiFi device can range from 500 to 1,500 yen per day, depending on the provider and data allowances. Some options offer unlimited data, but at a higher rental rate. In contrast, eSIMs typically offer a range of prepaid plans that can be more economical, especially for shorter trips. With various data packages available, travelers can select a plan that best fits their budget and data needs, potentially saving money in the long run.

Data Limits and Speeds

While both pocket WiFi and eSIMs provide reliable internet access, they can differ in terms of data limits and speeds. Pocket WiFi devices generally come with generous data limits, but excessive usage may incur additional fees or throttled speeds. Conversely, eSIMs often provide flexible data plans, allowing users to choose a package that suits their usage patterns. In urban areas, both options usually deliver excellent speeds, but when venturing into rural regions, it’s wise to check the specific coverage of your chosen eSIM provider, as some may have better service outside major cities.

User Experience and Maintenance

User experience plays a vital role in your decision-making process. Pocket WiFi devices can be relatively easy to set up, but connecting multiple devices may require some technical knowledge. Additionally, users must remember to charge the device and keep it secure to avoid loss or theft. eSIMs, however, offer a more streamlined approach. Once activated, they function like a regular SIM card, eliminating the need for additional equipment and the associated responsibilities. For travelers who prioritize ease of use, eSIMs can enhance the overall experience, allowing more time to enjoy the sights rather than managing tech.

Flexibility and Availability

Flexibility is another key consideration. Pocket WiFi rentals are widely available at airports and various rental shops, making them easy to acquire upon arrival. However, they often require returning the device to a specific location, which can be inconvenient if you’re on the move. eSIMs, in contrast, can be purchased online and activated before your trip or upon arrival in Japan, providing greater freedom in terms of timing and location. This can be particularly beneficial for last-minute travelers or those who want to start using their devices immediately.

Conclusion: Choosing the Right Option

In summary, both pocket WiFi and eSIMs have distinct advantages for tourists visiting Japan. Pocket WiFi is ideal for groups needing multiple connections and who appreciate the shared data experience, while eSIMs cater to solo travelers or those who prefer a low-maintenance approach. Your choice will ultimately depend on factors such as travel style, budget, and data needs. For many travelers, eSIMs offer a compelling mix of convenience and cost-effectiveness, but pocket WiFi can still be advantageous for larger groups. Regardless of your choice, ensuring reliable internet access will enhance your adventure, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the wonders of Japan.

Special Note:

Not all phones are created equal in this case. Some phone's (older one's) are not eSIM compatible. Make sure it is, before purchasing one. And our trusty Solis Lite will sit this one out.

Stay Connected

Japan, renowned for its advanced technology and seamless connectivity, is a traveler's dream. However, despite its high-tech reputation, not everyone has unlimited mobile data, especially international visitors. This is where Wi-Fi hotspots become a game changer, offering an easy, cost-effective way to stay connected across the country.

Why Wi-Fi Hotspots Matter

In Japan, many visitors rely on public transport systems and need real-time access to maps, navigation, translation apps, and travel information. Wi-Fi hotspots help bridge the connectivity gap, making sure you’re never lost in translation—literally.

1. Navigation**: Japan's intricate train and subway systems can be overwhelming, especially in large cities like Tokyo or Osaka. Wi-Fi allows instant access to transit apps, ensuring you can check routes, updates, and delays.

2. Communication**: Whether you’re reaching out to friends, contacting your Airbnb host, or using a translation app, having consistent Wi-Fi is essential. Wi-Fi hotspots are crucial for staying in touch with loved ones back home or coordinating with travel companions.

3. Cost-saving**: International roaming charges can be notoriously expensive. With widespread free or inexpensive Wi-Fi, you can bypass these costs and still enjoy seamless connectivity. Some hotspots offer unlimited access for a small fee, which can be far cheaper than a data plan.

4. Tourist-Friendly**: Many cities, train stations, airports, and cafes offer free Wi-Fi hotspots. Apps like “Japan Connected-Free Wi-Fi” aggregate over 150,000 free hotspots nationwide, allowing tourists to connect without hassle.

5. Data Security**: Many hotspots in Japan are secured, giving users peace of mind when accessing sensitive information. However, it’s always advisable to use a VPN for an extra layer of protection when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks.

Where to Find Wi-Fi Hotspots

Airports and Train Stations**: Japan’s major transportation hubs offer reliable free Wi-Fi. For example, you’ll find hotspots in places like Narita Airport or Shibuya Station in Tokyo.

Lawson near Osaka Castle

Convenience Stores**: Popular chains such as Lawson, 7-Eleven, and FamilyMart have free Wi-Fi for customers, making it easy to check your location or send quick messages while grabbing a snack.

Cafes and Restaurants**: Chain cafes like Starbucks or local spots often offer Wi-Fi for patrons. Just ask for the password, and you’re good to go.

Tourist Spots**: Many of Japan’s popular tourist destinations, such as temples, museums, and parks, provide Wi-Fi for visitors, ensuring you can instantly share your experiences on social media.

Portable Wi-Fi Options

If you prefer more control over your connection, consider renting a portable Wi-Fi router. Available at airports or online, these devices give you a personal Wi-Fi network wherever you go, ensuring a strong connection in rural areas or places where public Wi-Fi is scarce.

Conclusion

Wi-Fi hotspots in Japan are more than a convenience—they’re essential for a smooth travel experience. Whether you're navigating complex transit systems, checking in with loved ones, or updating your travel plans, access to reliable Wi-Fi keeps everything running smoothly. So, next time you visit Japan, take advantage of the countless hotspots available and stay effortlessly connected!

I compared several companies based on the length of our stay which is almost 3 weeks. I did not consider the speed of each since I won't be doing any high demand data usage and it's more for the cost and convenience

Ninja Wifi  - Unlimited plan, 3GB per day, 770 yen/per day - 17, 952 yen

Sakura Mobile - 11,780 yen

Mobal 100GB/month - 6.980 yen

Japan WiFi Rental - 50GB/month - 9,000 yen

Econnect Japan  - Premium plan 231 yen/day 50gb

PS. If you travel a lot I would suggest just buying a hotspot. Here's the one we use

Im starting to loose faith in you......LG

When we bought our house a few years back. LG was our first choice in all our appliances. I've had a good experience even before I was back in PI.

IMG_0307

It was a lil bit hard on the wallet having to buy just one brand, and it took us a while. We we're happy and satisfied. Until 2016 when the fridge broke down. It was only 4 years old back then, and the compressor and capacitor gave in. To make things worst, it was already off warranty.

We then had to purchase an extended warranty which cost $399 for a year and that would cover from parts to labor. Took around 3 weeks to get it fixed. And during this time, we had to purchase a chest freezer from Insignia (a Best Buy brand).

IMG_0311

And then a year later, our overhead microwave broke down. And to our surprise, it was only 3 years old and off warranty. But this time, it was not worth buying the extended warranty. This was very disappointing, considering that LG was supposed to be a very good brand.

IMG_0301

A few days ago, the fridge starting to act up again. Ice started to melt inside the freezer. Overnight, it was dead. This sucks now, since the extended warranty has lapsed again. And upon reaching out to LG, they said they'll cover just the condenser and we have to pay for everything else through their authorized repair guys.

I then proceeded to call the repair shops, and the estimate they gave me was around $450-$600 fro everything and this already includes the free condenser. So I called LG and inquired if they would let me avail the extended warranty but lo and behold, the agent said that they don't offer that anymore.

IMG_0306

And now my choices are either to have it fixed and might end up with another broken fridge or just buy a new one. I'm definitely choosing the latter.

By now, I'm not loosing my faith, rather lost it and I/m not even gonna look back to buy any LG electronics in the future. It's just a waste that I had to resort to buying new stuff, when these things should last you at least 10 years. I paid good money, I expect quality.

Update January 2019: Was not expecting for LG to reach out to us through our website. They did contact us and made some arrangements.  I appreciate the effort and thankful that some big corporations still cares how their products affect consumers.

Another reason to love Amazon

After watching The Greatest Showman a few weeks ago, both kids are now obsessed with its soundtrack. We have iTunes for our music library, unfortunately they'd rather listen to Alexa with our Echo devices.

They've been listening to the tracks, but Alexa was only able to play samples and bits of the songs. Feeling bad, I felt that I should do something since music plays a big part in our household.

We have Prime and I felt we're not maximizing the full extent of it. I discovered that there's Prime Music and that there's an IOS app. Upon downloading and logging onto our Amazon account, it showed me all the CD's I've purchased in the past years. And to my surprise, it gave me all the digital copies of them all!

Prime Music

I then bought a physical copy of The Greatest Showman soundtrack and was ecstatic to see the digital copy. But I was doing these all during my lunch break at work. I was bit frustrated since what I can do is very limited given that I am not home at the time.

Come night time, the kids were so excited that they can now listen to every music of the soundtrack. Alexa opened new doors again. A huge array of music playlist. Songs that we listen to and some even comes with lyrics. Karaoke mode at the gym? We even set Alexa to play our playlist  to wake us up in the morning.

Prime Music

This maybe old news for a few, but there are still some out there, like me, are just missing so much. Smart homes are here to stay. And this would be another reason to love Amazon.

Took another bite... again

The Apple watch Nike+ came out today. Anna really wanted the Series 3 edition.  Unfortunately, T-Mobile won't be getting their stash until November.

I wanted to get it from our mobile carrier since I don't want to fork out the money. Being the good husband that I am, I picked up Anna after work and headed towards the Apple store without any intentions of buying............ I'M THERE TO JUST LOOK AT IT. Right?

WRONG.  Marcus, the Apple guy was very helpful in assisting and answering questions that I threw at him. Strategically gave me the I-should-get-the-wife-her-watch look.

Apple watch Nike+

Hell, I'm not gonna fall for this.  But then the liar in me insisted I should get two. But my better judgment was able to resist buying both. So Marc's strategy worked well.  Saved some cash on-hand and still ended with a happy wife-happy life.

Apple watch Nike+

Maybe that's why the Apple symbol has a bite on it. It's the forbidden fruit. You just can't resist the allure and always fall for it.

Alexa...... (You know where this is going)

I happen to check on my Best Buy account yesterday and saw that I have a few dollar rewards to spend. Unfortunately, it expires that very same day. I immediately took off and on the way there, I was wondering what to get.

Was going around the store browsing and in my head sky was the limit...and the sky was at $35! Felt like a millionaire LOL. Took me a while but at the center of the store was Amazon's booth. And there it was, THE Dot. Just staring at me. It had a price tag of $40+. Oh hell, I'll just throw in some extra cash.

Amazon Echo Dot

I did not get to set the thing up until after midnight. It was a snap, took me a few minutes to get everything synced and just fell in love with Alexa.  I asked her to play me soothing music before heading to bed and just doze off until morning.

Amazon Echo Dot

Anna and the kids fell in love with it too. Now I understand why some people would buy several of these. You can't have just on!  At least 3 for the size of my house. And we also have one smart plug, now I want a dozen  LOL. I'm gonna start turning this house like what I've always wanted when I was a boy in the 80's.

"Alexa, finish this entry for me"

The night before the Switch

Been thinkin about this day since last week. Happy just couldn't stop talkin about March 3rd. And there's a midnight launch on most bigbox stores. I pre-ordered the system at both Gamestop and Bestbuy.

Too bad there's only a few games comin out and my Zelda ain't comin till next week. And there's really no point of me goin out tonight to get the Switch with no games.

Goodbye old friend

Our very first DSLR and it served me well.

This how it all started. My love for photography. This was my best companion all through those years that left me with picture perfect memories.

Canon XTi

I did pass this long ago to my dad but he had no interest and set aside. I then took it back and used it for a few more years. But I had to upgrade since the XTi can't meet my needs anymore.  And now I pass it along, and I know that it would inspire the same passion as I had to that person (Tita's).

Bug out

Blame it all to The Walking Dead and the recent Ebola outbreak, I had to re-evaluate and re-assemble our emergency stuff. We're half way done and most of our supplies are complete. I even got my dad to buy some too when he was here.

Our primary stash is ready to go and our back-ups are almost set. All we're missing now is zombie killing 4x4 truck and chainsaws. Besides that, we're ready to go.

Solar Freakin Roadways

I'm more of a Kickstarter backer but today a project at Indiegogo caught my eye. This one makes a lot of sense, and now it makes me want an open driveway since our garage is enclosed and covered.

As of today, funding is almost doubled, and the more the merrier, right? I really wish this would push through. This is one of those things that would definitely benefit everyone of us. And since i have kids, I want them to live in a world that would look like the future that we imagined and not some barren, zombie infested and apocalyptic mutant laden landscape.

So please, every dollar counts. Lets support this and make the future freaking awesome and bright.

imovie

I had to send a video greeting for Lola's birthday and my editing tool was the iMovie for MAC. Me being me, did not bother to do the tutorial, but everyone does the same thing (right?).

Made a simple video greeting. But then had to do the trailer maker, which was fun. Here it is.

Too bad we had to scrap this and go for the more traditional video

Itsy bitsy teeny weeny

You know those days when you went to the mall just because. I really had no plans in buying anything besides bare essentials.

Nikon Coolpix S01

Nikon S01 />

Why did I have to go to the electronics clearance section at Target. Maybe it's because that's what I always do? Anyways, there it was. With a red tag. On sale. Calling my name. And only one left.

Canon VS Nikon

<Nikon S01

Back to five months ago when me and Anna spotted this little thing. Yes, we already have a bunch of cameras. From SLR's, digicam, our iPhones and even vintage polaroids. But this was different, it's small, handy, can fit on your front jeans pocket and it's white. Gotta have a bunch of reasons of course.

Sony VS Nikon

Nikon S01

Back to present. I took it, put it in the cart and convinced Anna that this was a steal. I think back then it was $120, and now it's $69.99. Not even hitting the $70 mark. The more reason we gotta have it.

Look how small this thing is.

And let there be fire

After reading this blog http://zerocurrency.blogspot.com/2006/03/my-summary-of-why-i-live-moneyless.html I felt a bit guilty of how we live our lives. I'm not saying that I totally agree with the guy, but he does make sense. Money is indeed the root of everything (pretty much!) and like it or not, we do let it control our lives.

But enough of the serious talk.  I'm here to talk about our latest fancy.  With which I am going totally the opposite to make a hypocrite out of me after reading the mentioned blog. Hehehehe!!! Anyways, I finally pulled the trigger on Amazon's Kindle Fire. It was Anna's birthday a few days ago and since Mothers Day is coming around the corner as well, might as well give her another gadget that would be obsolete in a year or so (hammer my head, please).

Kindle Fire

The reason for the purchase was because Happy took over the Ipad which she now uses to watch her ABC's, shapes, colors, numbers, the whole world, blah, blah, blah... in Youtube.

I find Kindle very handy and nifty. You can prctically put it in a small bag or even a pocket and walk away. Don't get me wrong, the Ipad is more superior in most aspects when compared to Kindle and yes we do have our handy Iphones, but the small "K" has that portability into mind.

Kindle Fire  Kindle Fire

We've just tried it for a few minutes last night have yet to see how it goes and perform. It could be that sometimes bigger is not necessarily always better and smaller ones maybe so-so. So i'll cut the mid-size a slack.  Not too much, not much less.  Here's to hoping it's just about right.

Now on 3d

I told myself ever since not to jump to any bandwagon nor follow whatever is the latest trend. But yesterday I caved in.

It started two weeks ago, and I have to blame, when I saw an article in Yahoo. It says now is the right time to purchase a new TV since retailers are liquidating last years inventory.

3D TV

And I had to weigh in all the factors:

1. Everything online must be real/true? Right?
2. Our newest tv is 2 years old.
3. Trend. That means now.
4. Me? I'm a consumer. So that means they're telling me to buy.
5. Movie that pops out of your tv while wearing glasses. Implying that you're a geek. And that's m. Again.

3D TV

Pretty convincing. Take our good earned money you lousy electronics retail giant. Yep, that's you Bestbuy. And I won't be coming back............ Until I decide that we need another one.

Instagram

An app that would totally turn things around for me and Anna.

After acquiring all the expensive camera gear, not to mention heavy, I am now relying on my phone to take photos and upload them through flickr and facebook minus photoshop and my desktop. Sweet and nifty.  Very convenient and less hassle in my part.

But quality had to go to give way to convenience. And that's one huge sacrifice i had to burden knowing I may want printouts later on.  Perhaps, I'm just hit by the bug and just waiting for the right kick to start on my heavy and bulky camera kits again.

Seriously my little princess we need to go to bed... It's 10:30pm!!! @breehiveFace time with my tiny bruha! @breehiveGoing to be a man in a few minutes @happyanna Choco strawberry crepe with vanilla ice cream and mexican wedding cookies

really?

The day we're about to leave for PI, I decided I'd buy Nikon J1 for Anna. Huge mistake. Of course, we wanted the white version. Which apparently and oddly sold out in Best Buys and Targets in our area.

DSC07455

With a $600++ price tag, you'd think most people would rather go for an SLR since it is one of those hybrids that Sony came out with the NEX. I did try one on display stand, and I wasn't impressed since I'm already all too familiar with it's bigger half brother SLR, it did not appeal to me.

So I told Anna that her only hope would be to find one at our stop over in Incheon. I made it clear that if the SRP goes above $50, I wont buy her one.

DSC07459

We then arrived at Incheon 5AM and naturally most of the major shops don't open till 7AM. Our stop was only three hours which translates to an hour window to shop. Soon as the stores opened, we threaded the airport-mall-in-one from gate to gate. Luckily, we found a way better deal not offered anywhere in US -- read freebies: tripod, strap, nikon hot-stamped leather case, and extra wide lens! And yes, they have white in stock! Needless to say, i made the wife happy with her new toy.
